Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that aims to diagnose and treat the alignment of teeth in the lower and upper jaws and the relationships between the jaws. Misaligned or spaced teeth can lead to aesthetic issues, while teeth being in an ideal position may create problems in chewing and speaking functions.

Is there an age limit in orthodontics?

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that most children be examined by an orthodontist by the age of 7. This helps the orthodontist determine the most suitable time for any necessary treatment. There is no age limit for adults; individuals of any age can receive orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic Treatment Methods

There are various orthodontic treatment methods available for an ideal jaw relationship and tooth alignment:

Fixed Orthodontic Treatment (Braces)

Fixed orthodontic treatment is a common method performed using metal or ceramic brackets and archwires. Braces provide an effective solution for aligning teeth properly.

Invisalign (Clear Aligners - No Braces Treatment)

The Invisalign treatment consists of transparent aligners that are custom-made for each individual. These aligners are virtually invisible from the outside and can be easily removed and put back on. With transparent aligners, you can eat more comfortably compared to traditional braces and brush your teeth without difficulty. This method is popular among adult patients who have high aesthetic concerns.

Removable Appliances

Removable appliances used in young children correct skeletal jaw relationships, preventing the development of more serious orthodontic problems and reducing the need for braces.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the type of treatment and individual needs. Active orthodontic treatment typically lasts between 1 to 4 years, with an average duration of 2 years. Depending on the biological structure, the treatment duration can vary from person to person. Preventive and early treatments may only take a few months. Appliances are adjusted regularly during the treatment process. The factors that affect the treatment duration are:

  • The severity of the problem

  • The growth of the facial and jaw structures

  • The health of the teeth, gums, and jawbone

  • The individual's compliance with treatment

After Orthodontic Treatment

Retention appliances are used to prevent teeth from returning to their old position when treatment is completed. These can be fixed or removable:

  • Fixed Retainers: Placed on the inner surfaces of the front teeth and do not affect speech or tooth brushing.

  • Removable Retainers: These transparent and invisible retainers are made according to the size of the teeth and can be removed when desired.

Dental Care During Orthodontic Treatment

Individuals using braces need to brush their teeth twice a day. Bacteria accumulating around the brackets can cause tartar and cavities. To avoid damaging the braces, a toothbrush with soft bristles and a small head should be used. Additionally, it is recommended to use interproximal brushes to reach between the teeth.

Things to Consider During Treatment

Sugary and acidic drinks (such as cola, Fanta, soda, etc.) should be avoided.

Sticky foods such as gum, Turkish delight, jelly beans, and caramel should not be consumed.

Nuts, sweets, chocolate, cookies, pizza, or hard bread crusts should be avoided.

Pitted fruits (plum, apricot, olive) should be consumed cut with a knife.

Bread, bagels, hamburgers, and similar foods should be eaten sliced with a knife.
